TUCSON, Ariz. — A tragic incident in Marana on Monday, May 25, has left the community reeling after authorities confirmed that 36-year-old Mikaela Durfey and 37-year-old Brian Schnurr were both found dead in what investigators have now ruled a murder-suicide. The heartbreaking case, which unfolded near Silverbell and Cortaro, also involved the couple’s two young children, who were found unharmed.
According to the Marana Police Department, officers were called around 5 p.m. to a home in the 6700 block of West Alegria Drive after reports of a shooting. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Mikaela Durfey deceased in the driveway of the residence. Authorities confirmed she had suffered a fatal gunshot wound.
Investigators quickly identified Durfey’s ex-husband, Brian Schnurr, as a suspect in the shooting. Police immediately began searching for Schnurr and his vehicle, a blue Dodge Challenger, as they worked to determine his whereabouts in the aftermath of the deadly incident.
Shortly after, officers located the vehicle in the parking lot of a steakhouse in the 8500 block of North Silverbell Road, less than a mile from the family’s home. The discovery quickly escalated into a large police response as law enforcement moved in to secure the area.
According to on-scene reporting, multiple Marana Police Department units surrounded the suspect vehicle and boxed it in. Inside the car were the couple’s two young children. In a critical and emotional moment during the unfolding situation, officers safely removed the children from the vehicle without injury.
Following the rescue of the children, officers searched the nearby desert area. It was there that Brian Schnurr was located with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities confirmed that he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials have stated that the two deaths are being investigated as a murder-suicide, bringing a tragic conclusion to an already devastating sequence of events. Court records indicate that Mikaela Durfey filed for divorce from Schnurr in July 2025, adding further context to the circumstances leading up to the incident.
