In Loving Memory of Manuel Camarillo Ochoa

With deep sadness and heartfelt sorrow, the San Antonio community mourns the loss of Manuel Camarillo Ochoa, 66, who tragically died in an early morning house fire on the city’s Northwest Side. His passing has left family, friends, neighbors, and loved ones grieving a heartbreaking loss that unfolded in the early hours of Monday morning.

The fire broke out shortly after 3 a.m. at a home off Edison Drive near Interstate 10. Fire crews arrived to find heavy flames engulfing the rear portion of the residence. Family members at the scene reported that a loved one was still trapped inside, prompting firefighters to immediately enter the burning structure in an urgent attempt to rescue him.

Despite their courageous efforts, Manuel was located in the area of the home where the fire was most intense. Officials confirmed that he had already succumbed to the fire by the time crews reached him. His death has been ruled an accident.

According to the medical examiner, Ochoa’s passing was caused by hardening and narrowing of the arteries, with smoke and soot inhalation contributing to his death. While the official findings provide medical clarity, they do little to ease the emotional pain felt by those who loved him.

Family members shared that Manuel lived with his daughter in a split-section home but primarily stayed in the back portion of the residence, where the fire caused the most severe damage. That section of the house, described as an addition with multiple rooms, was heavily affected, while other family members were able to escape safely from the front portion of the home.

The tragedy was compounded by the loss of beloved family pets. Several animals were inside the home at the time of the fire. Family members said eight dogs perished in the blaze, while firefighters were able to rescue three or four others. The loss of these animals has added another layer of grief for the family, who are now mourning both a loved one and cherished companions.

Neighbors who knew Manuel expressed shock and sadness as they watched the devastating fire unfold. Many recalled seeing him in the neighborhood and described him as a familiar, quiet presence. Some shared small acts of kindness they remembered, including helping him with everyday tasks, reflecting a life that touched others in simple but meaningful ways.

“I seen him a few times. And then after I haven’t seen him, I don’t know. That’s why I was worried,” one neighbor said, reflecting the concern many felt when they realized something was wrong.

Fire investigators also noted that hoarding conditions inside the home made it more difficult for crews to navigate the structure during rescue efforts. Despite these challenges, firefighters worked tirelessly under dangerous conditions to try to reach the victim and contain the blaze. No firefighters were injured during the response.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. While there has been speculation that a candle in a bathroom may have started the fire, officials have not confirmed this detail and continue to examine the evidence.

As the investigation continues, the focus for many has shifted to remembering Manuel Camarillo Ochoa not only for the circumstances of his passing, but for the life he lived. He was a father, a neighbor, a family member, and a man who, in his own way, was part of the fabric of his community.

The pain of his loss is deeply felt by those who knew him best. In the midst of tragedy, family and friends are holding onto memories—moments shared, conversations remembered, and the presence of a man who mattered deeply to them.

As San Antonio mourns this devastating loss, support and condolences continue to pour in for his loved ones. Though his life ended in tragedy, the memory of Manuel will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and cared for him.

Rest in peace, Manuel Camarillo Ochoa. You are gone from sight, but never from memory. Forever loved, forever remembered, and forever missed.
