Authorities in Huntington are continuing a homicide investigation after 29-year-old Wesley Eugene Mitchem was fatally shot Sunday evening in the city’s west side, according to local law enforcement.
The Huntington Police Department said officers responded just before 8 p.m. to the 2600 block of 5th Avenue after receiving reports of a shooting in the area. When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a male victim who had already succumbed to his injuries.
Police and emergency personnel attempted to assess the situation, but the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
On Monday morning, Phil Watkins confirmed the identity of the victim as 29-year-old Wesley Eugene Mitchem of South Point, Ohio.
Investigators with the Huntington Police Department have officially classified the case as a homicide. Detectives are actively working to gather evidence, review witness statements, and determine the events that led up to the fatal shooting.
At this time, authorities have not announced any arrests in connection with the case, and no suspect information has been released to the public. The motive for the shooting also remains under investigation.
