In Loving Memory of Meridian Woodson

The Jefferson Parish community is mourning the heartbreaking and tragic loss of 28-year-old Meridian Woodson, whose life was taken far too soon in a devastating act of violence Thursday morning in Elmwood. According to the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office, Meridian was pronounced dead inside her apartment at the Palmetto Creek complex in the 5100 block of Citrus Boulevard after authorities say she was shot and killed by her ex-husband before he later turned the gun on himself nearby.

Investigators have not yet publicly identified Woodson’s former husband, described as a 30-year-old Westwego man who was hospitalized in critical condition after Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office investigators say he shot himself in the parking lot of a shopping center next door to his ex-wife’s apartment complex.

Deputies were dispatched to Woodson’s residence just after 10 a.m. Thursday after receiving a 911 call reporting a disturbance at the apartment, according to Capt. Jason Rivarde, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office. When deputies arrived, they discovered Meridian suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Despite emergency response efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities immediately began searching for the suspect and soon located his silver extended cab GMC pickup truck parked in the shopping center at 5151 Citrus Blvd., adjacent to the apartment complex. Rivarde said deputies found the man suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and he was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

As the investigation unfolded Thursday afternoon, the scene remained heavy with grief and shock. The suspect’s truck sat isolated from other vehicles in the shopping center parking lot as Sheriff’s Office detectives processed evidence. Yellow crime scene tape surrounded the vehicle while investigators carefully documented the scene. Witnesses reported seeing all four doors of the truck open, with blood dripping from the driver’s side into a large puddle on the pavement below. The vehicle was later towed from the scene as authorities continued their investigation.

Meanwhile, at the Palmetto Creek apartment complex, detectives, crime scene analysts, and investigators from the coroner’s office could be seen quietly working throughout the property. Several officials gathered near one of the apartment buildings before walking up to the third-floor breezeway where the tragic incident occurred.

Residents of the normally peaceful community expressed disbelief over the violence that unfolded in their neighborhood. Jeffrey Daniels, 40, who lives at Palmetto Creek, said he was taking out the trash Thursday morning when he noticed several property patrol officers rushing through the complex.

Daniels said he had not heard gunshots or any major commotion at first, but shortly afterward he saw deputies, flashing emergency lights, and ambulances arriving at the scene. Like many residents, he later learned the devastating details through news reports and was left stunned by the tragedy.

“This is such a family-oriented community. There are students, families and kids here,” Daniels said. “I’ve never experienced anything like this here.”
