Family, friends, and members of the Piedmont community are mourning the tragic loss of Josh Hill, a 35-year-old man whose body was recovered from Clearwater Lake following an extensive three-day search effort.
The heartbreaking recovery was made shortly after 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16, near the Webb Creek marina area of Clearwater Lake. Authorities confirmed that Hill’s family had been notified following the discovery. While officials initially declined to release the victim’s name out of respect for the family, numerous social media posts identified the missing man as Josh Hill.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Troop G received a report at approximately 2:18 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, that a man had fallen from a pontoon boat while on Clearwater Lake. Early reports indicated that he had been wearing a life jacket; however, investigators later determined that he was not wearing one at the time he disappeared.
Authorities said Hill was last seen in a photograph taken with friends around 1:30 p.m. Sunday. He was reportedly wearing pink swim trunks and was not wearing shoes or glasses. When the group later returned to the dock, it was discovered around 2:03 p.m. that Hill was no longer aboard the boat. Efforts to locate him immediately began, but he could not be found.
The area where Hill disappeared stretched between Clearwater Lake Marina and Webb Creek, a large section of water that presented significant challenges for search crews. As hours turned into days, emergency responders, law enforcement personnel, volunteers, family members, and friends worked tirelessly in hopes of bringing him home.
What began as a rescue mission eventually transitioned into a recovery operation as the search entered its third day. The Missouri State Highway Patrol utilized specialized technology to assist with underwater search efforts, while volunteers throughout the community organized their own search initiatives.
According to social media posts shared by loved ones, the response from the community was overwhelming. Volunteers searched shorelines, monitored waterways, and coordinated efforts to assist authorities. Requests were circulated for drones equipped with thermal imaging technology and other resources that could aid in locating Hill. Many residents answered the call, demonstrating the strength and compassion of a community united by hope.
The discovery of Hill’s body on Tuesday brought a heartbreaking conclusion to days of uncertainty and anguish for those who knew and loved him. While the outcome was not the one family and friends had prayed for, many expressed gratitude to the countless individuals who devoted their time, equipment, and energy to the search effort.
Clearwater Lake, a reservoir located along the Black River approximately six miles from Piedmont, is a popular destination for boating, fishing, and recreation. Yet for one family, what began as a day on the water ended in unimaginable tragedy.
As loved ones process this devastating loss, they remember Josh Hill for the life he lived, the friendships he built, and the memories he created with those closest to him. The outpouring of support seen throughout the search effort reflects the impact he had on the people around him and the many lives he touched during his 35 years.
Though the search has ended, the grief remains for those left behind. Family and friends now face the difficult task of moving forward while holding on to the memories that made Josh special.
In loving memory of Josh Hill. May his memory live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and may his loved ones find strength and comfort in the days ahead. Rest peacefully.
