Arrest Made in Carter County Homicide Investigation Following Death of Jaylen Burleson

ELIZABETHTON— The Carter County community continues to mourn the loss of 18-year-old Jaylen Burleson as investigators announced the arrest of 19-year-old Morland Orvil Whitely of Johnson City in connection with the homicide investigation. The tragic case, which has deeply impacted family members, friends, and community residents, has moved swiftly as authorities work to uncover the circumstances surrounding the death of the young Valley Forge resident.

According to officials with the Carter County Sheriff’s Office, Whitely has been charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. The charges stem from an investigation that began in the early morning hours on Friday following a reported shooting at a residence on Earl McKinney Road in the Valley Forge community.

Authorities said the investigation began shortly after 4 a.m. when emergency dispatchers received a 911 call reporting that a man had been shot inside a home. Deputies and responding officers quickly arrived at the residence and discovered a tragic scene inside.

Investigators reported finding the body of an 18-year-old male lying on the floor of the home. The victim was later identified as Jaylen Burleson, who lived at the Earl McKinney Road residence.

News of Jaylen’s death has left many throughout Carter County and surrounding areas struggling to come to terms with the sudden and heartbreaking loss of a young man whose life had only just begun. “I would like to commend our patrol officers and investigators along with the agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for their hard work in this investigation,” Sheriff Fraley said. “In less than 12 hours we had a suspect identified and in custody.”

Authorities stated that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation assisted the Carter County Sheriff’s Office during the case as investigators continued processing evidence and determining all factors surrounding the incident.

While an arrest has been made, investigators have indicated that the case remains active and ongoing. Officials stated that additional charges could still be filed as detectives continue reviewing evidence and conducting further investigative work.
