POWELL COUNTY, Ky. — A devastating tragedy unfolded Tuesday evening in Powell County after a weather-related collision on KY 213 claimed the life of 19-year-old Luke Pierce, leaving a community grieving a young life lost far too soon.
Authorities identified the victim as Luke Pierce, according to Powell County Coroner Megan Wells-Curtis. News of his sudden passing has brought sadness throughout the area as family members, friends, and loved ones struggle to process the heartbreaking loss.
According to preliminary information released by officials, the crash occurred during the evening hours on KY 213 under dangerous weather conditions. Investigators reported that the vehicle hydroplaned on the wet roadway, causing the driver to lose control before the car left the roadway and went over an embankment.
Hydroplaning can happen in a matter of seconds and often leaves drivers with very little ability to regain control of their vehicles. Rain-soaked roads and standing water create dangerous travel conditions, increasing the risk of serious accidents, especially when visibility and traction become compromised. Authorities believe weather conditions were a significant factor in Tuesday’s fatal crash.
