The community of Ithaca and the surrounding Cayuga Heights area is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 19-year-old Breanne Keanne, whose life was tragically cut short following a violent stabbing incident on Saturday afternoon near Cornell University.
According to the Cayuga Heights Police Department, officers responded around 2:00 p.m. to reports of a stabbing at 709 Triphammer Road. When emergency personnel arrived, they found Breanne suffering from severe injuries. First responders immediately began life-saving measures at the scene before transporting her to a nearby trauma center, where medical teams continued intensive efforts to save her life. Despite these urgent interventions, Breanne’s injuries proved fatal, and she passed away while en route to the hospital.
Breanne’s passing has left family members, friends, classmates, and members of the Ithaca community devastated. At just 19 years old, she was at the beginning of her adult life—full of promise, dreams, and the hope of a future that will now remain unfulfilled. Those who knew her are left grappling with shock and grief, remembering her not for the tragedy that took her life, but for the light she brought into the lives of others.
Following the incident, police arrested 20-year-old Damian Stewart of Ithaca at the scene. Authorities have charged him with second-degree murder, and he is currently being held at the Tompkins County Jail. He has since been arraigned in Tompkins County Centralized Arraignment Court as the investigation continues.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Cayuga Heights Police Department, New York State Police, Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, Cayuga Heights Fire Department, and Bangs Ambulance, all responded to the scene and assisted in the emergency response and ongoing investigation.
As officials continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident, the focus for many in the community remains on honoring Breanne’s memory and supporting those who loved her most. Vigils and tributes are expected as friends and neighbors come together to mourn a life taken far too soon.
Though her time was brief, Breanne Keanne’s memory will endure in the hearts of those who knew her—as a daughter, a friend, and a young woman whose presence mattered deeply. Her loss is not only a private tragedy for her loved ones but also a painful moment for a community reminded of how fragile life can be.
May she be remembered in peace, and may her loved ones find strength and comfort in the days ahead.
