Family, friends, teammates, coaches, and communities across Florida and Georgia are mourning the heartbreaking and sudden loss of 17-year-old Deontavis Cooper, whose life was tragically cut short following a devastating single-vehicle crash in Leon County. Alongside Deontavis, two other 18-year-old passengers were critically injured in the crash, leaving loved ones holding onto hope while also grieving an unimaginable loss.
Deontavis, affectionately known as “Big Coop,” was a standout football athlete and proud graduate of Thomas County Central High School. He was widely respected not only for his strength and talent on the field, but also for his character, work ethic, and the positive influence he had on everyone around him. His dedication to the game and his team helped lead the Yellow Jackets to two state championships, moments that will forever remain part of the school’s proud history.
Beyond high school football, Deontavis achieved a major milestone when he signed to continue his athletic and academic journey with Tulane University, a dream he had worked tirelessly toward. Coaches and teammates say he was preparing to begin the next chapter of his life, one filled with promise, opportunity, and continued success.
Those who knew Deontavis remember far more than his athletic accomplishments. They remember a young man who carried himself with humility, energy, and heart. He was a teammate who uplifted others, a friend who brought joy to those around him, and a son whose presence meant everything to his family.
Head Coach Justin Rogers of Thomas County Central High School shared heartfelt words honoring Deontavis, expressing that although his dream was cut far too short, the impact he made on teammates, teachers, friends, and family will live on forever. The Thomas County School District also extended its condolences, joining countless others in mourning his passing.
At just 17 years old, Deontavis stood at the beginning of a future filled with potential, goals, and dreams yet to be realized. His sudden passing is a painful reminder of how fragile life can be and how quickly everything can change in a moment.
As family and friends continue to grieve, they are choosing to hold onto the memories, the laughter, and the legacy he leaves behind. Though his time here was brief, the love he shared and the lives he touched will never be forgotten.
May Deontavis Cooper rest in eternal peace, forever remembered and deeply cherished.
