A heartbreaking pedestrian tragedy in Rush Township has left the Schuylkill County community mourning the loss of Austin J. Didgen, 31, of Barnesville, who died after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross a roadway on Sunday evening.
According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the fatal incident occurred at approximately 6:01 p.m. on May 31, 2026, in the 200 block of Grier Avenue. Authorities reported that Didgen was struck by a northbound vehicle as he entered the roadway for reasons still under investigation.
Emergency personnel responded swiftly to the scene and transported Austin J. Didgen to St. Luke’s Miners Memorial Hospital in an effort to save his life. Despite medical intervention, he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased, leaving family, friends, and the community in deep shock and grief.
The driver involved in the crash was identified as 22-year-old Erick M. Chavez of Freeland. Police confirmed that the driver was not injured in the collision. The vehicle involved, a 2020 Honda Civic, sustained minor damage to the front driver’s side area.
Authorities have stated that no charges have been filed at this time, as the investigation remains ongoing. Pennsylvania State Police, along with assisting agencies, continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash in order to fully understand how the tragic incident unfolded.
