According to the Brownsville Police Department, officers were called at approximately 12:34 p.m. to the Holiday Inn in the 600 block of Sunrise Blvd. for a death investigation. Upon arrival, officers were informed by hotel staff that two individuals—an adult male and an adult female—had been found deceased inside a room.

Preliminary findings indicate that both individuals were discovered in bed with apparent gunshot wounds to the head. A firearm was also recovered at the scene. Following an initial investigation, authorities believe the incident to be a possible murder-suicide.

Investigators later identified the deceased as German Navarro Lopez, 39, and Shelsy Solis Sosa, 38. Officials stated that evidence suggests German Navarro Lopez shot Shelsy before turning the weapon on himself. Authorities also confirmed that the two were in a romantic relationship at the time of the incident.

As the investigation remains ongoing, police continue to examine the circumstances that led to this devastating event. Officials have emphasized that all findings are preliminary and subject to further review as additional evidence is collected.

Behind the official statements lies a profound human tragedy—two lives lost, families shattered, and a community struggling to comprehend how a private moment ended in irreversible loss. Loved ones of German and Shelsy are now left to grapple with grief, questions, and memories of two individuals whose lives were deeply intertwined.

In Loving Memory of Meridian Woodson

The Jefferson Parish community is mourning the heartbreaking and tragic loss of 28-year-old Meridian Woodson, whose life was taken far too soon in a devastating act of violence Thursday morning in Elmwood. According to the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office, Meridian was pronounced dead inside her apartment at the Palmetto Creek complex in the 5100 block of Citrus Boulevard after authorities say she was shot and killed by her ex-husband before he later turned the gun on himself nearby.

Investigators have not yet publicly identified Woodson’s former husband, described as a 30-year-old Westwego man who was hospitalized in critical condition after Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office investigators say he shot himself in the parking lot of a shopping center next door to his ex-wife’s apartment complex.

Deputies were dispatched to Woodson’s residence just after 10 a.m. Thursday after receiving a 911 call reporting a disturbance at the apartment, according to Capt. Jason Rivarde, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office. When deputies arrived, they discovered Meridian suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Despite emergency response efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities immediately began searching for the suspect and soon located his silver extended cab GMC pickup truck parked in the shopping center at 5151 Citrus Blvd., adjacent to the apartment complex. Rivarde said deputies found the man suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and he was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

As the investigation unfolded Thursday afternoon, the scene remained heavy with grief and shock. The suspect’s truck sat isolated from other vehicles in the shopping center parking lot as Sheriff’s Office detectives processed evidence. Yellow crime scene tape surrounded the vehicle while investigators carefully documented the scene. Witnesses reported seeing all four doors of the truck open, with blood dripping from the driver’s side into a large puddle on the pavement below. The vehicle was later towed from the scene as authorities continued their investigation.

Meanwhile, at the Palmetto Creek apartment complex, detectives, crime scene analysts, and investigators from the coroner’s office could be seen quietly working throughout the property. Several officials gathered near one of the apartment buildings before walking up to the third-floor breezeway where the tragic incident occurred.

Residents of the normally peaceful community expressed disbelief over the violence that unfolded in their neighborhood. Jeffrey Daniels, 40, who lives at Palmetto Creek, said he was taking out the trash Thursday morning when he noticed several property patrol officers rushing through the complex.

Daniels said he had not heard gunshots or any major commotion at first, but shortly afterward he saw deputies, flashing emergency lights, and ambulances arriving at the scene. Like many residents, he later learned the devastating details through news reports and was left stunned by the tragedy.

“This is such a family-oriented community. There are students, families and kids here,” Daniels said. “I’ve never experienced anything like this here.”

The heartbreaking loss of Meridian Woodson has left family, friends, neighbors, and loved ones grieving not only the loss of a young woman full of life, but also a devoted mother whose world revolved around her two young daughters, ages 4 and 7. Those who knew Meridian describe her as caring, loving, hardworking, and deeply dedicated to her children. Her family says she cherished every moment with her daughters and always worked to create a safe and loving environment for them.

As loved ones struggle to process this unimaginable tragedy, many are remembering Meridian for her warmth, compassion, beautiful spirit, and the love she freely gave to others. Her sudden passing leaves behind an irreplaceable void in the lives of all who knew her, especially in the hearts of her young girls who will forever carry the memory of their mother’s love.

This tragedy has also become another painful reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence and the lasting heartbreak it leaves behind for families and communities alike. Across Jefferson Parish, many are offering prayers, condolences, and support to Meridian’s grieving family during this incredibly difficult time.

Though her life was tragically cut short, Meridian Woodson’s love, kindness, and devotion as a mother will never be forgotten. Her memory will continue to live on through her children, her loved ones, and everyone whose lives she touched.

Rest peacefully, Meridian Woodson. You will forever be loved, remembered, and deeply missed.

  • IN LOVING MEMORY TAYLOR DOBBINS

    IN LOVING MEMORY TAYLOR DOBBINS

The Jonesboro community is mourning the tragic loss of 41-year-old Taylor Dobbins, who lost his life in a devastating multi-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 49 on Wednesday afternoon, May 27.

According to preliminary reports, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 2:13 p.m. in Jonesboro, when a westbound 2015 Dodge Charger hydroplaned on the rain-slick roadway. The vehicle lost control, crossed the centerline, and collided with an oncoming 2025 Nissan Rogue, resulting in a violent impact that ended in tragedy.

Following the collision, the Dodge Charger left the roadway and overturned. Emergency responders arrived quickly and worked to assist those involved, but despite their efforts, Taylor Dobbins of Jonesboro was pronounced deceased at the scene. His sudden passing has left family, friends, and the community grieving an unexpected and heartbreaking loss.

The driver of the Nissan Rogue, 44-year-old Penny Spaulding, sustained injuries and was transported to St. Bernards Regional Medical Center for medical treatment. Authorities have not released additional details regarding her condition but confirmed she survived the crash.

According to the fatal crash report, the aftermath of the collision also involved additional vehicles traveling through the area. A 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer and a 2025 Ram pickup truck struck debris left in the roadway following the initial impact. While no further serious injuries were reported from those secondary impacts, the scene became increasingly complex as emergency crews worked to clear the highway and assist all motorists affected.

Officials noted that wet weather conditions played a significant role in the crash, with hydroplaning identified as the primary factor in the loss of control. The dangerous roadway conditions caused the vehicle to lose traction, leading to the crossover into oncoming traffic and the fatal impact.

Law enforcement officers remained on scene for an extended period as investigators documented evidence, measured roadway markings, and reconstructed the sequence of events. Traffic along U.S. 49 was temporarily disrupted while crews worked to restore safety to the area.

As the investigation continues, authorities have not indicated that any charges are expected. The incident remains under review as part of standard crash investigation procedures.

Taylor Dobbins is being remembered for his life, his presence, and the impact he had on those who knew him. His passing serves as a painful reminder of how quickly circumstances on the road can change, leaving behind grief for a life taken far too soon.
