The community of Pendergrass, Georgia, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Terrell Shelton, a 21-year-old young man whose life was tragically cut short following a drowning incident at Lake Lanier on Saturday, June 13, 2026.
According to officials with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Shelton was reported missing after entering the waters near Robinson Park in Hall County. Authorities later confirmed that his body was located and recovered Saturday night at approximately 11:24 p.m. after an extensive search effort involving multiple emergency agencies.
The tragedy unfolded during what was intended to be a day spent enjoying the lake with friends. Investigators said Shelton was swimming toward a nearby island with a group of companions when the incident occurred. His friends reportedly realized something was wrong when they looked back and could no longer see him in the water. Concerned for his safety, they immediately contacted emergency services at approximately 2:40 p.m.
A massive search operation quickly began, bringing together personnel from the Hall County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, Hall County Fire Rescue Marine Rescue teams, and Georgia DNR game wardens. Search crews worked tirelessly on both land and water, utilizing boats, sonar equipment, and specialized dive teams in an effort to locate Shelton.
Authorities noted that the area where Shelton disappeared is approximately 30 feet deep, creating difficult conditions for rescuers.
