Milwaukee Father of Four Juan Mejia Dies in Tragic Drowning Accident at Nagawicka Lake

DELAFIELD, Wis. — A Wisconsin family is mourning an unimaginable loss after 38-year-old Juan Mejia of Milwaukee drowned Saturday afternoon at Nagawicka Lake in Delafield, leaving behind his wife, four children, and a fifth child on the way.

According to Delafield police, emergency crews from multiple agencies were dispatched to the Nagawicka County Boat Launch after receiving reports of a possible drowning. Authorities said a man who had been on a boat entered the water and failed to resurface, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation.

Family members later confirmed that the victim was Juan Mejia, a devoted husband, father, and man of faith whose sudden death has left loved ones devastated.

According to relatives who spoke with WISN 12 News, Mejia had jumped into the lake for a swim when he became caught in a strong current. Family members said the current quickly began pulling him farther away from shore. Within minutes, they lost sight of him as he disappeared beneath the water.

The tragic incident triggered an extensive emergency response involving numerous agencies from across Waukesha County. Witnesses observed drones flying overhead while dive teams searched the water below. Emergency crews worked tirelessly for more than two hours in hopes of locating Mejia.

Authorities temporarily closed both public boat launches on Nagawicka Lake during the search operation as rescuers coordinated efforts on the water and along the shoreline. Despite the rapid response and exhaustive search efforts, Mejia was eventually recovered from the lake and pronounced deceased.

Lake Country Fire & Rescue deployed specialized water-rescue resources, including seven boats, dive rescue personnel, and aerial drone technology. Officials praised the coordinated efforts of firefighters, law enforcement officers, and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources personnel who worked together throughout the difficult operation.

In a statement released following the tragedy, Lake Country Fire & Rescue extended condolences to all those impacted by the loss.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic incident,” department leadership said. “We are grateful for the rapid, coordinated response of all fire, law enforcement, and DNR personnel who worked together under challenging circumstances.”

For the Mejia family, however, the focus remains on the life of the man they lost rather than the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

In an emotional statement, relatives described Juan as a devoted Christian, husband, father, son, uncle, and friend who was deeply loved by those around him.

“Juan Mejia tragically passed away in an accident drowning in the lake. He was a Christian man, husband and father of five children, and he was taken away too soon,” the family said. “We will miss Juan dearly and we ask for the community’s help as we mourn the loss of a man of faith, son, father, husband and uncle.”

The loss is particularly heartbreaking because Mejia’s wife is currently expecting the couple’s fifth child. Family members now face the difficult reality of preparing to welcome a new baby while grieving the loss of a husband and father who played such a central role in their lives.

Friends and community members have already begun offering support, prayers, and condolences to the grieving family. A GoFundMe campaign has been organized to help cover funeral expenses and provide assistance during this difficult time.

As investigators from the Delafield Police Department and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the drowning, loved ones are left remembering a man whose life revolved around faith, family, and the people he cared for most.

Juan Mejia’s death serves as a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly tragedy can strike and how precious every moment with loved ones truly is. He leaves behind a legacy of love, devotion, and faith that will continue to live on through his family and all those whose lives he touched.

The investigation remains ongoing.
