Family, friends, classmates, and members of the Bedford Heights community are mourning the heartbreaking and devastating loss of Eugene “EJ” Wilkerson, whose young life came to a tragic end following a drowning incident on Thursday afternoon in Aurora, Ohio.
According to officials, the incident unfolded shortly after 4 p.m. when emergency crews were dispatched to the 300 block of Treat Road after a 911 call reported that a teenager was struggling in the waters of Quarry Lake. Responders arrived quickly and immediately launched a search and rescue operation as concern grew for the missing teen.
The Aurora Fire Department, along with members of the Portage County Water Rescue Team, entered the water and conducted an extensive and urgent search effort in hopes of saving EJ. For more than two hours, rescue crews worked under difficult and emotional conditions, refusing to give up hope as they searched the area.
At approximately 6:15 p.m., dive teams located EJ’s body beneath the water. Officials reported he was found nearly 10 feet underwater and approximately 25 feet from the shoreline. Despite every possible effort made by first responders, he was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.
Authorities have confirmed that the incident remains under investigation as officials continue working to determine the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
Beyond the details of the response and investigation, those who knew EJ are left grieving an unimaginable loss. Known affectionately as “EJ,” he was remembered as a bright, kind, and energetic young soul whose presence brought joy to his family, friends, and everyone around him.
His passing has left a deep void in the hearts of those who loved him. Classmates, teachers, teammates, and community members have all been impacted by the sudden loss of a life filled with promise, potential, and future dreams that will now be carried forward in memory alone.
